Douglas Tobler helped assist Karl-Heinz Schnibbe when he wrote his book, The Price, published in 1984. The dust jacket for that book said of him:
With major studies in German history, Douglas F. Tobler received his B.A. and M.A. from Brigham Young University and his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He is a professor of history at Brigham Young University and is also coordinator for European studies in the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at that institution. He has written books and articles on German history and on the history of the Latter-day Saints in Europe. The author and his wife, the former Carol Joy Noble, have four children.
